ELECTION OFFICIAL GENERAL INFORMATION

Voting in Monterey County is administered by qualified Election Officials (Inspectors and Clerks) who are appointed by the Monterey County Registrar of Voters.

Precinct Officers are responsible for conducting the voting in strict accordance with the election code laws of the State of California, and in doing so, they perform a very important service in preserving democracy. The mission of the Monterey County Election Officer is: TEAMWORK, CUSTOMER SERVICE, PROTECTION OF VOTING RIGHTS, and maintaining the INTEGRITY OF POLLING PLACES, VOTING MACHINES, AND VOTES!

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Be at least 18 years of age and a registered voter in the State of California, or
  • Be a high school junior or senior at least 16 years of age and in good academic standing
  • Read and write English
  • Work on Election Day from 6:15 a.m. until all duties are completed (approximately 10 p.m.)
  • Attend a one and a half to two hour mandatory training class, per election
  • Have transportation to the Polling Place
  • Be dedicated, be cooperative, and be professional.

DUTIES of the Inspectors and Clerks are:

  • Prepare, open and close the polling place location
  • Find voters name on roster of voters
  • Issue and receive official ballots from voters
  • Assist voters in any phase of the voting process
  • Perform all duties assigned by the Registrar of Voters or Precinct Inspector

THE INSPECTOR, in addition must:

  • Be in charge of the Polling Place and Precinct Board on Election Day
  • Assign duties to Clerks on Election Day
  • Receive and check election supplies
  • Call his/her Precinct Board and confirm they will work on Election Day
  • Visit his/her Polling Place prior to Election Day and confirm availability

PAYMENT. Election Officials will be paid as follows:

  • Inspector $150 to $205 depending on duties performed
  • Clerks $110 to $120 depending on duties performed
