September 14, 2021 California Gubernatorial Recall Election

By Order of the Lieutenant Governor of the State of California, the California Gubernatorial Election will be held on September 14, 2021, to determine whether Gavin Newsom, governor of the State of California, shall be recalled, and if the majority vote on the question is to recall, to elect a successor. All active registered voters will receive a ballot in the mail by law.

 

Important Dates

August 16 – September 14

  • voting services available at Elections (including in-person voting)

August 16

  • all ballots and local voter information guides will be mailed by this date
  • ballot return location(s) open

August 30

  • last day for regular registration

September 7

  • last day MCE will mail ballots
  • recommended last day for voters to mail back ballots

September 14

  • last day to return ballots in-person
  • ballots must be postmarked no later than this date
  • last day to vote

To prepare for the election:

  • Check your address information by visiting My Voter Status or call (831) 796-1499.

  • Are you going to be out of town during the election? Call us with your temporary address and we will mail your ballot to where you are staying. Election material cannot be forwarded and will be returned to Monterey County Elections.

  • Update your information at Register to Vote.

  • Look for your ballot in the mail the week of August 16 (your ballot packet will include return instructions and your local voter guide).

  • Return your ballot in the mail (postage is paid) or to any drop-off location in the state.

  • Sign-up for Where’s My Ballot? to receive notifications about tracking your ballot.

FAQ's:

Why is there a sample ballot in my vote by mail packet?

The sample ballot is required for this type of mailing where the information pamphlet is included in the packet.

 

What happens if I voted and returned my sample ballot?

By law, sample ballots can be counted just like an official ballot. If the sample ballot is returned in the official envelope and contains the eligible voter's signature, it will be counted.

 

How do I know if my ballot was counted?

Voters can check the status of their ballot at any time.

How can you prevent someone from voting twice?

There are procedures in place to prevent multiple ballots from being counted for one voter.

Where can I vote in person?

In-person voting opportunities will be available for those who need assistance or wish to vote in person. In-person voting locations include:

The Monterey County Elections Office and the Satellite Vote Location at Embassy Suites will be open during special weekend hours from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on September 11th and September 12th.
